“I’m saying nothing,” Old Tom replied, as a satisfied smile blossomed on his wrinkled face, “I was about 22 when I started teaching in the early 1980s. Every Friday after school, we’d sit in this staffroom and play cards, drink beers, smoke cigs. We had a right good laugh. It got the week’s tension out of your system. When six o’clock came, Walter, he was the caretaker back then, he’d have to lock up. So, we’d walk to the Black Horse and carry on till about nine. Then we’d have to go home because we were all hammered. It was brilliant. Those were the days. I met my wife in this staffroom.”
